Colin Little (53)
Managing Director - Hulamin Extrusions
Qualifications
B. Sc (Civil Engineering), Pr. Eng, MBA
Years service
10 years with Hulamin, after 11 years with Tongaat Hulett. He was appointed to the board in 1998.
Role at Hulamin
Colin runs Hulamin Extrusions (which is Hulamin’s joint venture company with Hydro Aluminium of Norway) as well as Hulamin Systems, the downstream stocking and building products businesses. He also oversees Hulamin’s interests in Almin Metal Industries in Zimbabwe (a joint venture with Zimbabwe’s IDC).
What experience has equipped you for this role?
Having worked for TongaatHulett for 20 years, most recently 9 years as Managing Director of Hulamin Extrusions, I have a broad range of experience from being a Professional Engineer, to strong brand and marketing experience as well as 9 years of service on the Exco of the Aluminium Federation.
What are your greatest challenges in leading Hulamin Extrusions?
One of my most important roles is to enable and develop the people in the business to contribute to improved business performance. Other challenges include managing some of the smaller business units to expand and deliver on their mandate to grow the local market.
What issues do you see having a major impact on Hulamin Extrusions in the coming years?
A specific focus, which already has well developed action plans in place, is the threat of low priced imports from China. We have also taken action to counter the shortage of skills in key areas of our business in South Africa. Attracting and retaining good people, while at the same time making a meaningful contribution to Employment Equity is an ongoing part of our business.
Colin has a daughter, Dominique, and enjoys golf, travel and South African history
