How has your experience has equipped your role?
I have spent time in a wide range of roles in Rolled Products. These include five years in manufacturing and six years in sales and marketing. This has given me a good perspective on the business and detailed experience in running the operations on a day to day basis.

What is your vision for Hulamin?

I am excited about the future of Hulamin, particularly in a global context. I believe that to be successful, one either has to be a major player with costs competitive with the Chinese or a niche player, such as Hulamin. We thus need to continue to develop our technological competence to stay ahead of the pack.

What challenges do you see having a major impact on Hulamin in the coming years?

I think the dichotomy of global competitiveness and local relevance will continue to be with us for the foreseeable future, and believe that we have the people to be successful in both areas.

Firstly, I believe that our employees are definitely our greatest asset. There are so many issues that, when well managed, will allow and encourage our employees to focus on their performance and development. I also strongly believe that the HR team must be supportive of line management, working closely with and in the operations so that HR is an integrated part of managing the business.

What challenges do you see having a major impact on Hulamin in the coming years?
All people, but especially in South Africa, need hope. In South Africa, this includes both black and white, but for different reasons. We have to be sensitive to the context of our business and hopefully provide a vision of hope for people through employment, enterprise development, corporate social investment etc.

          Role at Hulamin

Having worked for TongaatHulett for 20 years, most recently 9 years as Managing Director of Hulamin Extrusions, I have a broad range of experience from being a Professional Engineer, to strong brand and marketing experience as well as 9 years of service on the Exco of the Aluminium Federation.

What are your greatest challenges in leading Hulamin Extrusions?
One of my most important roles is to enable and develop the people in the business to contribute to improved business performance. Other challenges include managing some of the smaller business units to expand and deliver on their mandate to grow the local market.

What issues do you see having a major impact on Hulamin Extrusions in the coming years?
A specific focus, which already has well developed action plans in place, is the threat of low priced imports from China. We have also taken action to counter the shortage of skills in key areas of our business in South Africa. Attracting and retaining good people, while at the same time making a meaningful contribution to Employment Equity is an ongoing part of our business.

I believe we have all the ingredients to exceed stakeholder expectations. Most
notably to be an employer of choice, attracting and retaining high calibre

Keeping pace with, and in many cases getting ahead in technology will be a
